What materials are flat carrier tapes made of?

Flat carrier tapes play a crucial role in the electronics and manufacturing industries, serving as a reliable way to transport and protect small electronic components during handling, shipping, and assembly processes. As a flat carrier tape supplier, I’ve gotten tons of questions from customers about the materials used to make these tapes. So, I thought it’d be a good idea to write this blog to share what I know. Polyester (PET)

One of the most commonly used materials for flat carrier tapes is polyester, specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is a synthetic polymer that offers a bunch of benefits that make it an ideal choice for this application.

First off, PET has excellent dimensional stability. That means it won’t stretch or shrink too much when exposed to different temperatures and humidity levels. This is super important because flat carrier tapes need to keep a consistent shape to properly hold the electronic components. If the tape warps or changes size, it could misalign the components, leading to all sorts of issues during assembly.

Another great thing about PET is its high tensile strength. It can withstand a fair amount of pulling and stretching without breaking. This is necessary since the tapes are often pulled through various machinery during the manufacturing and assembly processes. You don’t want the tape to snap in the middle of an operation, right?

PET also has good chemical resistance. It can resist the effects of many chemicals that it might come into contact with during production, storage, and use. This helps to protect the electronic components from any damage that could be caused by chemical reactions.

In addition, PET is a clear material, which allows for easy visual inspection of the components inside the carrier tape. Manufacturers can quickly check for any defects or issues with the components without having to open the tape.

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonate is another material that’s sometimes used for flat carrier tapes. PC is a strong, tough, and transparent plastic that has some unique properties.

One of the main advantages of polycarbonate is its impact resistance. It can take a pretty hard hit without cracking or breaking. This is useful in applications where the carrier tapes might be subject to rough handling or accidental impacts during transportation or storage.

PC also has good heat resistance. It can withstand relatively high temperatures without deforming. This is important in some manufacturing processes where the tapes might be exposed to heat, such as during soldering or other heat – treating operations.

Like PET, polycarbonate is also clear, which is beneficial for component inspection. However, compared to PET, polycarbonate is generally more expensive. So, it’s often used in situations where its special properties, like high impact and heat resistance, are really needed.

Polystyrene (PS)

Polystyrene is a widely used plastic that’s also used in flat carrier tapes, especially in some less – demanding applications.

PS is a relatively inexpensive material, which makes it an attractive option for cost – sensitive projects. It has a nice balance between stiffness and flexibility, which allows the carrier tape to bend and conform to different shapes and machinery setups.

It’s also easy to process. Manufacturers can use various molding and forming techniques to create flat carrier tapes from polystyrene. This means that it can be produced in large quantities relatively quickly and efficiently.

However, polystyrene has some limitations. It’s not as strong as PET or polycarbonate, and it has lower chemical and heat resistance. So, it’s usually not used in applications where the tapes will be exposed to harsh chemicals or high temperatures.

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is a versatile plastic that’s used in many different industries, and flat carrier tapes are no exception.

PP has good chemical resistance, especially to non – polar solvents. This makes it suitable for applications where the tapes might come into contact with certain types of chemicals during the manufacturing process.

It’s also lightweight, which can be an advantage when it comes to shipping and handling. The lower weight can reduce transportation costs and make it easier to manage the tapes in large quantities.

Polypropylene has a relatively low friction coefficient, which means that the components can slide smoothly inside the carrier tape. This is important for efficient assembly processes, as it allows the components to be picked and placed more easily.

However, like polystyrene, polypropylene has lower heat resistance compared to PET and polycarbonate. So, it’s generally not used in high – temperature applications.

Additives and Coatings

Regardless of the base material, flat carrier tapes often have additives and coatings to enhance their performance.

For example, anti – static additives are commonly used. Electronic components are very sensitive to static electricity, and static charges can damage them. Anti – static additives help to dissipate static charges, protecting the components from electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Some tapes also have lubricant coatings. These coatings reduce friction between the tape and the components, as well as between the tape and the machinery. This makes the components easier to pick and place, and it also helps to prevent wear and tear on the machinery.

UV – resistant additives might be added if the tapes are going to be used or stored outdoors or in areas with a lot of sunlight. UV rays can degrade the plastic materials over time, and these additives help to extend the lifespan of the tapes.

Choosing the Right Material

As a flat carrier tape supplier, I always tell my customers that choosing the right material depends on a few key factors.

First, consider the type of electronic components that the tape will be carrying. If the components are very sensitive to heat or static, you’ll need a material with good heat resistance and anti – static properties. For example, if you’re transporting microchips, you might want to use a PET tape with anti – static additives.

The manufacturing and assembly processes also matter. If the tapes will be exposed to high temperatures during soldering, a heat – resistant material like polycarbonate might be a better choice. On the other hand, if cost is a major concern and the process is relatively gentle, polystyrene or polypropylene could work.

Storage and transportation conditions are important too. If the tapes will be stored in a humid environment, you’ll want a material that’s not too affected by moisture. And if they’ll be shipped over long distances and might be subject to rough handling, a material with good impact resistance, like polycarbonate, would be more suitable.
